Zero Steel chains launched – FB Ketju is the first chain manufacturer to use SSAB Zero™ steel
FB Ketju launched the first Zero Steel conveyor chains made from SSAB Zero™ steel on Tuesday, March 10, at the Underhållsmässan event in Sweden. The steel developed by SSAB for use in chains does not generate any fossil carbon dioxide emissions. FB Ketju has already incorporated the steel into its production and it is available to all customers.
The first Zero Steel chains produced were presented in Sweden in March 2026 at the Underhållsmässan trade fair at the stands of both FB Kedjor and SSAB.
The steel industry produces more carbon dioxide than steel. This, together with EU legislation and end-users' sustainability goals, prompted SSAB, the largest steel producer in the Nordic countries, to develop low-carbon and carbon-free steels.
FB Ketju is one of the pioneers of the steel industry's green transition, as it has now adopted fossil-free SSAB Zero™ steel. The first Zero Steel chains manufactured from this steel material were presented in Sweden in March 2026 at the Underhållsmässan trade fair at the stands of both FB Kedjor and SSAB.
"The world's first chains made from SSAB Zero™ steel were completed at our factory in Lappi in early February. This is a significant step in the green transition, so it was a momentous occasion when we marked the first plates with the Zero logo," says Mika Suomi, CEO of FB Ketju.
Response to ever-growing demand
SSAB launched a development project in 2016 and launched SSAB Zero™ steel, made from recycled steel using fossil-free energy, in 2023. Its production generates virtually no fossil carbon dioxide emissions.
"We are now the first company to use SSAB Zero™ steel as part of our chain production. We have minimized emissions from our own operations and manufacturing as much as possible, and now, with Zero Steel chains made from SSAB Zero™, we can offer the same for steel," says Suomi.
The quality and properties of the steel are the same as traditional steel, but with lower emissions.
"We can now offer all our customers CO2-free chains, as this material is now available. We have produced trial batches and verified its functionality in practice. Zero Steel chains respond to the growing demand that has long existed among our customers.
“It was a momentous occasion when we marked the first plates with the Zero logo.”
